How to fix windows update when it gets stuck at 0 percent or 100

With the latest Windows 10, Microsoft has set it to automatically download and install windows updates. That means Windows update words silently in the background and whenever new windows updates available download and install them automatically.  Or for some updates, you need to restart to apply them. But sometimes it doesn’t work as expected, windows update stuck downloading or checking for updates. There are several reasons that cause windows Update to stuck downloading or fail to install but most often, these types of problems are due to a software conflict or maybe a pre-existing issue in the update that was not identified until the update began installing and more. Here solutions you may apply to fix and install windows update successfully.

Windows update stuck downloading

Before getting start check and Confirm the Update Is Truly Stuck? Because sometimes due to slow internet connection downloading update files from Microsoft server may take some time. That’s why we suggest to wait a few more minutes and let the updates download.

Also, check and make sure you have a working internet connection,

Temporarily disable Antivirus protection, and also disconnect from VPN (if configured on your PC)

Next Start windows into clean boot state And check for windows updates. This will help if any third-party software conflict causing windows Update to stuck downloading.

Also, Open Command prompt as administrator Run DISM command ” DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ” To repair the system image and Run sfc /scannow ( System file checker utility ) to check and restore if any missing, corrupted system files causing windows update to stuck downloading or installing.

Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

Run the Build in Windows update troubleshooter that helps to detect and fix the problems cause windows Update to stuck downloading and installing.

  1. Press keyboard shortcut, Windows + I to open the settings app,

  2. Click Update & security then click windows update,

  3. On right-hand side, select windows update and then select run the troubleshooter,

In most cases, the Troubleshooter will tell you there are pending updates to install. Click ‘Apply this fix’ and allow the Troubleshooter to install them. In other cases, you will need to follow the onscreen instructions to repair the update.

And If found any problem the update troubleshooter try to fix the problem itself. After complete the troubleshooting process simply restart windows and now check for updates from settings -> update & security -> windows update -> check for updates.

Reset Windows Update components

Also, there is chances that windows update database get corrupted itself that conflict with new updates to download and install. Lets reset windows update components and force windows Update to download fresh update files from Microsoft server.

Open the command prompt as administrator, and perform command below to stop windows update and its related BITs service.

  1. net stop wuauserv

  2. net stop bits

Now navigate to file explorer then C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\download.

Here delete all data inside the download folder, to do this press Ctrl + A keyboard shortcut and press the Del key.

Clear Windows update cache

Now-Again open command prompt and run command “net start wuauserv” and  “net start bits” To restart the Windows Update Service and Background Intelligent Transfer Service which you previously stopped.

Lets again open settings, Update & security then hit check for updates button.

Install Windows Update manually

If all the above solutions fail to fix the problem, still windows update stuck downloading or fails to install then let’s install windows updates manually.

Visit the Windows 10 update history webpage where you can notice the logs of all the previous Windows updates that have been released.

For the most recently released update, note down the KB number.

Now use Windows Update Catalog Website to search for the update specified by the KB number you noted down. Download the update depending on if your machine is 32-bit = x86 or 64-bit=x64.

Open the downloaded file in order to install the update.
