Microsoft releases KB4100347 update for Windows 10 version 1803

Microsoft has recently rolled out the Intel firmware update (KB4100347) to all supported devices Running Windows 10 April 2018 Update version 1803. It is worth noting that Windows 10 KB4100347 is only shipped to PCs with Intel processors, and it includes more mitigations for the Spectre Variant 2 vulnerability. CVE 2017-5715 (Spectre Variant 2) is one of the vulnerabilities found in Intel CPUs and disclosed earlier this year. This update also includes Intel microcode updates that were already released for these operating systems at the time of release to manufacturing (RTM).

Among the CPUs getting microcode update as part of KB4100347, worth highlighting are Skylake and Kaby Lake series, both of which have already received other security fixes in the previous months from Intel and Microsoft. The full list of chips getting further mitigations with this update is available here.

About Windows 10 KB4100347 Update

KB4100347 was officially released on May 15 and can now be downloaded manually via Windows Update or the Windows Update Catalog

Microsoft’s official support page has a full list of supported processors. These include Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, Broadwell, SkyLake, Haswell, Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge processors from Intel. Microsoft plans to extend its support for processors with an upcoming microcode update.

KB4100347 is related to the never-ending saga of Spectre v2 mitigations. This update package contains additional CPU microcode updates for Intel processors.

This update is a standalone update that is available through the Microsoft Update Catalog and targeted for Windows 10 version 1803 (Windows April 2018 Update) and Windows Server 2016 Version 1803 (Server Core).

Previous versions of Windows have already received Intel microcode patches via the Windows Update mechanism in KB4090007 and KB4091666.

This update also includes Intel microcode updates that were already released for these operating systems at the time of release to manufacturing (RTM).

The updates contain only Intel-specific code, which Microsoft agreed a while back to help propagate to users faster than relying on motherboard providers to include the microcode patches as BIOS updates, a process that would have taken months, if not years.
